Where a large engine is cheapest

A 6.2-litre V8 meets a displacement tariff in some cantons and a CO₂ surcharge in others. The difference runs to multiples.

Displacement, CO₂ – or both

For a vehicle like this, two penalties run in parallel. Cantons on a displacement tariff count linearly, per cubic centimetre, with no ceiling. Cantons that read CO₂ add a surcharge that bites exactly at the values such an engine reaches. Where both apply, the bill becomes a multiple of what the same car costs in a weight-based canton – there the only thing that counts is that it is heavy, and heavy it is regardless.
